Calcium Supplements Side Effects too much? No doubt about it: Calcium plays an important role in building and maintaining strong bones and muscles, as well as supporting many critical functions essential for good health. Without enough calcium, serious medical issues can develop that can take a major toll on the musculoskeletal system and overall health and wellness.
Thanks to a strong marketing campaign for milk-based products, which supply the lion's share of calcium for many adults, most people are aware of the benefits of calcium and the vitally important role it plays in maintaining health. But there's a flip side to all that marketing and awareness: By emphasizing the important role of calcium, the need for additional calcium in the form of supplements may be overestimated – and that can lead to serious medical issues.
When it comes to nutritional supplements, one of the common misconceptions is you can't have too much of a “good thing.” But in fact, the body relies on a careful balance of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to ensure optimal function of each organ and tissue; take too much of these nutrients, and you can throw your body off balance – and expose yourself to serious health risks.
Calcium supplements are a great example. Most literature today focuses on the significant benefits of calcium without devoting much attention to calcium supplements side effects. That's probably at least partly due to the fact that in a normal diet, it's fairly difficult to consume too much calcium. But it's a whole other story when calcium supplements are involved.
According to the National Institutes of Health, having too much calcium in the bloodstream (a condition called hypercalcemia) can cause serious kidney problems, making it more difficult for kidneys to filter out impurities as well as substantially increasing the risk for painful and scarring kidney stones.
High calcium levels can also cause soft tissues and blood vessels to become hardened and “calcified,” as well as increasing the risk of developing calcium deposits inside the blood vessels.
As calcium deposits build up, they can interfere with the normal flow of blood and substantially increase the risk of having a heart attack. Other potential calcium supplements side effects include constipation, malabsorption of zinc and iron, and an increased risk of prostate cancer.
